Making homemade laundry detergent in my kitchen trash can sounded like a great idea at the time.

I’m growing The Blob in my kitchen trash cash.

YES it’s intentional.

Although, I can hardly blame you for wondering.

(Funny…I just read this blog entry about this woman who blogs about her home and how she entered this photo challenge from some designer magazine to take pictures of her home….before she cleaned it up. You know… It doesn’t have to be perfect to be beautiful? Well, she was totally freaking out and apologizing for the mess and how awful it was and how she’s been buried under work for the last two weeks, etc. My god, she must be channeling Mr. Clean, because her “disaster area” looks like my house an hour after it’s been deep cleaned. Sometimes I really really hate other people.)

I’m making my own laundry detergent.

No, I’m not crazy—I have several reasons for shredding five bars of soap in my salad shooter this morning and then proceeding to make a gigantic mess in my kitchen. This laundry detergent is gentle, safe, good for the fishes down stream and very economical.

Because I have 8 million better things to be doing, I calculated that if you use Mrs. Meyers laundry detergent, it costs approximately 37 cents per load. My homemade detergent? 8 cents.

I mean, I’m trying to be more economical. (I have to be able to afford my eight dollar salt and organic coffee somehow…)

Ok, really, the real reason I’m doing this is because it is SO MUCH FUN.

You can find good chemical free laundry detergent for cheap enough to make this 24 hour process completely excessive.

But who cares?

I grated glycerin soap and melted it down on the stove. I bought “Washing Soda” and used my electric hand mixer to whip the crap out the stuff once I’d dumped it all into my (thoroughly scrubbed) trash can. I kept having flash backs to my days of reading Laura Ingall Wilder while I stirred the gook with giant wooden spoon.

My very own, homemade laundry detergent is fermenting (or setting?)—AS I TYPE—in my kitchen.

I can’t wait to do laundry now.
