Who knew that Christmas card were so much work?

Posted on November 10, 2008. Filed under: Home, Personal, Relationships, Work | Tags: , , , , , |

Wow. I had no idea putting together Christmas cards was going to be such a hassel.

I also didn’t think that I would enjoy it quite so much. However, I wasn’t expecting my light, fun idea of ‘Oh, I’ll just dash out a bunch of thoughtful, lovely greeting cards and still have time to do my nails’ to turn into a week long extravaganza of writing a newsletter, scrounging around for addresses and debating between the $8.99 box of 50 not recycled cards and $10.99 box of 12 recycled cards.

Anyways, other fall/Holiday happenings. In one week I made and canned pumpkin butter, deep cleaned my house, cooked every night and started this whole Christmas card thing.

I haven’t been so domestic since I was nesting while pregnant with David–and even then, I couldn’t do very much because, yeah. Eight months pregnant is not very conducive to anything but chocolate eating whale imitations. (more…)

So what do you if your boss winds up in the ER?

Posted on October 11, 2008. Filed under: General Musings, Home, Personal, Work | Tags: , , , |

So I got a call at 5:34pm this past Sunday from my boss’s boyfriend informing me that she was desperately ill and was in the hospital.

What a week.

I have never been so extraordinarily glad that it is Friday.

It wasn’t as if I was jumping in to a smooth sailing business and taking over–no…….

The owner and the only other employee other than myself had both been very sick the week before. We had been hoping that they would both be up to speed so I could catch my breath (and not whatever they both had) and have enough people to meet client demands.

So things were already kind of tatters work wise

And I was hosting a dinner party that night at 6pm.

I think there’s some kind of cosmic curse on dinner parties. (more…)

It’s five o’clock in, um…..Japan, right?

So—Austin has all of these reasons for claiming to be this awesome city.

Large collection of hippies. Barton Springs. The whole live music scene. Self proclaimed enviromental visionary city. How fit everyone is. Urban creeks. Etc.

But you know what has impressed everyone who’s come to visit?

That all of the coffeeshops serve beer and wine. (more…)

My friend was bear maced and I accidentally flashed a client

Freaking Tuesdays.

One of my clients called me “earnest” today.

I can’t decide if that was a compliment or a subtle put down.

I’m going with subtle put down.

There was a miscommunication this afternoon and I thought that my 2pm client had no-showed.

This really upset me off because a) I was there b) I wanted the hours and c) I was in the freaking groove and ready to clean. You know when you’re headed to work and, you know, you’re not entirely looking forward to going into work, but you know once you get started, it really won’t be that bad–you just have to get started. So yes. I was over the hard part of getting ready for work and wanted to keep on making money. (more…)

Coffee = smart choice

Posted on September 12, 2008. Filed under: Work | Tags: , , , , , |

I was thinking about doing some kind of meaninful, insightful, fabulous post about great customer service….

…and then even I fell asleep at the thought. *yawn*

Which since I’m up to my ears (which = progress as I’m not longer drowning) in school and the Urban Roots article would be bad.

Anyways, I cleaned for a new client today and I totally made some rookie mistakes… I mean, like, really stupid stuff like crumbs on the counter, didn’t use enough clean micros for dusting and missed some hair and mold in the bathroom.

I went back there and fixed everything (so sick of not having a/c! It’s like the 2nd level of hell in my little car…) and took an hour off of her invoice…which, kind of sucks, because other than the obvious mistakes–her place was reeeeeallly clean. Floors were perfect, rugs all shook out or vacuumed…. But, whatever.

I am a customer service goddess.

Moral of the story?

No more 8am cleans WITHOUT coffee! (more…)

So I think I was just mugged

Posted on September 8, 2008. Filed under: Funny, Work | Tags: , , |

So. Last week I was assaulted by a homeless women.

To rub salt in the wound– it was 8am on a Saturday and I hadn’t even finished my first cup of coffee.

I was driving out to Amanda’s to pick up the stuff for the Farmer’s Market.

I suppose the first mistake was that John bought his car in Seattle–where AC doesn’t come standard, so I’m driving with the windows down.

It was still August in Austin. It’s damn hot.

Now, the next mistake was mine. I’m pulling up to the red light on 12th and Chicon and when I thought about rolling up my windows because there was a slightly crazed looking woman standing in the middle of the intersection, I squashed the urge….because that was judgemental of me.

Later, when recounting the following incident, Amanda was like “Oh, 12th and Chicon? My friend was stabbed and maced there a few nights ago while he was riding his bike home, but he’s like, totally all right.”

Me: Dude, I don’t think being stabbed and maced qualifies anyone was being “all right”.

Amanda: Yeah… I guess so. I think they were after his bike, but he managed to ride away.

Me: You would think if you went to the trouble of stabbing and macing someone for their bike–you would just take it!

Amanda: I know, right?

Me: Sloppy work.

Anyways, stupid windows were down, major guilt was rising up and crazy woman comes up asks me for a dollar. My pastors words about the poor and the homeless (Jim!) running through my head, I reach into my purse and pull out the three measly bucks I have to my name and I hand disheveled woman one of them.

Disheveled woman: *screeching* NO, NO! I NEED THREE DOLLARS! I’ll, I’LL GIVE YOU THREE HUNDRED NEXT WEEK!

Me: uh……………

*Light turns green, cars behind me start honking*

Disheveled Woman shoves her head into my car, reaches past me to the passenger seat and grabs my purse .

Me. HEY! *yanks purse back and stomps on the gas*

The only reason I escaped with even a *shred* of dignity is that I didn’t stall the stupid car while peeling out of the intersection.

Anyways, that was kind of crazy. Didn’t need coffee later in the morning that’s for sure.

First coffee in three days

Posted on August 29, 2008. Filed under: Personal, Work | Tags: , , |

So today was a day of high moments.

Hmm.

That looks funny.

What I mean to say is that, in addition to “No, I’m not smoking at work”, today has been filled with a couple of lovely happy “YAYAYAY” moments.

Employee training + booze?

Posted on August 16, 2008. Filed under: Family, Work | Tags: , , , |

I started a new job this week with The Purple Fig Cleaning Co. (www.cleanfig.com) Long story, but as part of the manager position that I took, I’m cleaning houses. (yay exercise!) So today, I was at my new job training with the owner, Amanda.

Now, if you haven’t met Amanda, then this story won’t make as much sense–but to give you a little bit of help, Amanda is a red head. And she’s tiny. And extremely cool.

So, I accidentally scratched this enamel stove top with the back of a sponge, and I’m mentioning to Amanda that, as part of the training and procedural manual I’m writing, we should have a section on DON’TS.

DON’T mix hydrogen peroxide and vinegar

DON’T use vinegar on natural stone

Wow–that’s all I can think of. Not good… 🙂

This was Amanda’s reaction; her eyes lit up and she said, “Oh my GOD! We should totally make flash cards and quiz each other and….OH MY GOD, it can be part of our weekly happy hours AND WE SHOULD TOTALLY MAKE IT A DRINKING GAME WITH SHOTS!”

So, in honor of my first week at the Purple Fig….here is your Friday Fun Link.

Looking forward to trying out the “Ally McBeal” drinking game….
